The time has finally arrived.

After years of work (and of not working at all), The Surfactants are finally able to release our new album Our Dead Bodies unto the world.

Not only that, but we have two new singles. Both All That Burns Is Burning and One Time feature album tracks and two remixes.

The full Our Dead Bodies download includes hi-res artwork as well as several wallpapers.

You can listen to everything in its entirety, for free, here. The singles are $1. The album is $4. You can also pay more, if you'd like.

There are currently NO plans to release physical versions of anything. If you cannot use Bandcamp/PayPal to purchase the album, please email contact at thesurfactants dot com to work out other options.

Zac has just released a new solo album under the name Dirty Knobs. It's an 8 hour (yes, you heard that right) electronic/drone/doom album called Field Recordings from the Edge of Hell.

You can stream the entire album for free, download a couple tracks for free (that total almost 60 minutes!) or purchase the entire 8 hour, 13 track album for only $1 (or more, if you'd like.)

Good news everyone! You can now get our first full album Diminishing Returns for only ONE DOLLAR on Bandcamp! You can also listen to it for free.

As a special incentive for those of you who might have already picked it up on iTunes or Amazon, consider these two facts:

1: Bandcamp allows you to get the album in a wide variety of formats, including several that are of a much higher quality than the MP3s offered by iTunes and Amazon. At the highest quality it will be just like hearing the master recordings!

2: The Bandcamp album comes with a bonus track! We've included a remix of "The One, The Wayward" that is not available anywhere else. That has to be worth a dollar, right?

A review on Stereotoid

The handsome gentleman over at Stereotoid have posted a review of Diminishing Returns. Not only do they think that Marcus "does not suck at all," and that "the album seems to progressively mature as each track plays and by the time the time track 'Us Against All' played I was completely floored at how good it was," but they also compare it to the Earthbound soundtrack! I think we have found our target audience.

Go read it. Oh, and who is this Nine Inch Nails band we're listed alongside? Never heard of 'em.

Hi everyone.

Recording is advancing, albeit at a slower pace than originally hoped for. It's a combination of crazy schedules and a bit of a halt in song writing while said crazy schedules get worked out. BUT! Things are moving forward.

You may have heard some of the new songs at our last live show a Luce, and you'll get to hear new stuff at the upcoming shows in Minneapolis and St. Paul. In fact, we have a large number of new songs in various states of completion. It's just getting them all the way to done that's taking some time.

So, hang in there! We've got more surprises on the way, and I think you'll really like the final product. We really want to make it worth the wait. For now, check out the sample of the new "The One, The Wayward" remix in the previous post. We think it's pretty OK.

So it's been a week, but better late than never? Huge wet, sloppy thanks to Duck Duck Punch and International Espionage! for playing. I know that I was personally very excited to see both bands and they did not disappoint. I'm really happy to see a band like Duck Duck Punch come out of Duluth. We really need more adventurous bands like them to shake up this complacent, all-too-safe scene. And of course IE! was fantastic, not to mention resplendent in their covert-ops body suits and twirly red lights. They really are a band you need to see live, so if you get the chance, do not miss them!

Also, big thanks to everyone who came out and had a good time with us. I was really proud of the show. It's only with your help and support that we'll be able to do things like this more often. Please let your local venue of choice know that you want to see more of us! You have the power.

My First Five (Marcus): Tears for Fears - Sowing The Seeds of Love

This was the first secular record I ever bought, and the first to get me into a lot of trouble. I was sixteen and I already had one foot out the church door. I had gone to visit my father in Florida, where I discovered “Songs From the Big Chair”, which I blasted over and over again until my head hurt. By the time I got back, the new record had come out, so I went and bought it. It didn’t give me the rush that songs like “Shout” and “Head Over Heals” had, but it WASN’T Christian and it was ALL MINE. It was quickly found and taken away (and eventually returned). I still dig this record.

So there you have it. I was weaned on Christian rock. And yeah, it was fucking horrible sometimes, but not always. These days it’s more of a mind-fuck than anything, because I still love some of this music, but I deeply hate what it represents.

Ultimately, I don’t give a shit. I do what I do. I say what I say.

Now go burn down a church or something.

I once sat in the front row at a Russ Taff concert. When he started playing the wonderful “Believe In Love” (from his excellent self-titled record), I raised my hands into the air. Taff came over, took my hand, and didn’t let go until the song was over. In later years he would go on to embarrass himself with country records, praise records and many televangelist show appearances, but the fucker did teach me about the importance of connecting with an audience, and the impact it can have when accomplished.

The story is very long, and will be detailed in a short book I intend to write at some point, but the short version is that I was raised in a Christian cult. They controlled most aspects of my life, including my taste in music. I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music of any kind, and was also barred from listening to Christian music that the church found to be ‘worldly’. Thankfully, I had a rock and roll loving ex-hippie for a stepfather, and the ban of Christian rock was not enforced in our house.

Despite my evolution into a militant atheist, I still look on this time as crucial to my overall development as a musician and songwriter.

The following is a list of the first five records that I bought with my own money.

It pains me more deeply than I can possibly express to give this cocksucker any credit for anything whatsoever, given that he is now a Hannity puppet and a close personal friend of George W. Bush, but the truth is that in the 80’s I learned a lot about melodic construction from Mr. Smith’s music. This particular record taught me about production and execution. Still a very listenable pop record. Too bad I can’t listen to it without seeing Sean Hannity’s fat fucking face staring right at me.

This is another album that I can't really remember past a couple songs. "Carrie" was another single, a massive power ballad type thing. And yeah, I liked that one too. It's easy to look back and scoff at these guys, but hey, good songs are good songs, you know. It's easy to get caught up on a band's image or style and instantly dismiss them. That's something I keep trying to overcome. But man, I really do still hate hip-hop and hippies.

This was always a really weird album to me, even at the time I got it. Obviously I picked it up for "I Can't Drive 55," and I had no idea who Sammy Hagar was. I remember nothing else from the album, aside from a bit of "VOA," and, of course, "Dick in the Dirt." I can remember being really nervous that my mom would hear that one. I didn't know what it was about, but I knew it couldn't be good. I suppose that made the album all the more special, but even back then I felt weird about it. Still do. I mean, what the hell? "Dick in the dirt?" I think I get it now, but...seriously, Sammy?

My cousin Karen was a major influence in my early musical development. She was into all kinds of metal and hair metal bands. While I never got into Cinderella or Mötley Crüe, I instantly fell in love with Metallica and Van Halen. Her family lived near Chicago, so it was always fun to visit. I once went to visit them by myself (I would have been about 8 or 9 at the time) and it was a blast. I spent each night laying in their guest room, in the unfamiliar darkness, blasting 1984 in my headphones. I got to hang out with this rockin' teenage girl, drive around the suburbs, go to any arcade I wanted, listen to anything. It was a different planet entirely.

This was the second album I ever owned, right after Thriller. Those two albums pretty much summed up my childhood. A sort of innocent fascination with darkness. Stay Hungry is still a great album, especially for a kid in second or third grade. I mean, it doesn't get much better that "We're Not Gonna take It" and "I Wanna Rock," two of the best stupidly rebellious songs ever. Plus the bright colors went a long way with me back then. I suppose now I'd call them a vis-kei band (look it up). By this time I had an awesome dual cassette player. It was silver and black. Just like my silver parachute pants and matching jacket. Yep.

This was the very first album that I picked out myself. I can still vaguely remember the trip to Kmart with my mom. That Kmart (long gone) is still legendary in my mind.

I played the cassette on an ancient portable tape player that belonged to my mom when she was younger. It was about the size of a shoebox, half as tall, brown and white with a handle on the end that slid out so you could carry it around. There was also an earphone jack. They only earphones we had were also vintage. It was just a single, huge, earbud-style thing. Stereo wasn't a concern back when this thing was made, I guess. I spent just about every waking hour listening to that cassette over and over. It's not like I had anything else to do or listen to.

I no longer remember much from Thriller, but I'm sure I could still sing along to it, with all my childishly misunderstood lyrics completely intact. "Mama say, mama saw, ma ma koo saw!" indeed.

Rock for the Tots Debriefing

First off, a huge thanks to everyone who came out to Norm's for an ass-load of rock and roll last night! The show we really well all around, mostly because the crowd was so great. It always makes the bands step-up their game when the crowd it in full force. A lot of people seems to genuinely like us, something we insecure emo douche-bags need to hear more often.

Without Polysics, The Surfactants wouldn't exist. End of story. They took Devo and mixed it with raw punk and created something brand new. But the key is that they pulled it off without becoming some sort of trendy mess like just about ever other "new-wave" pop band out there. The Surfactants basically took their rhythmic, stuttering, staccato format and substituted metal for punk, more or less. Also, where Polysics are purely fun, The Surfactants try to be just a wee bit more serious. Eno is my personal favorite album, but they are all good. I like the huge amount of noise and distortion on Eno, coupled with the super catchy songs. It can do no wrong.

Vola & the Oriental Machine have always been a furiously frantic band, but their 2009 album Sa-Ka-Na Electric Device took their break-neck post-punk to new heights, and lows. The album adds in an electronic element not really found on their previous work, and to great effect. Sometimes subtle, sometimes overt, the addition of synths and drum machines allows the band to add a bit of experimentation to the mix, providing straight up dance rock and some really dark stuff too. Sa-Ka-Na Electric Device has just enough pop to draw in some of the more timid listeners, and also provides something to expand their pallets.

Album of the year, hands down. From the obsessively intricate production to the roller-coaster song structure, Just A Moment is a true masterpiece. The best thing is that it doesn't have any of that self-conscious bullshit you get with the arrogant types who usually try something this monumental. Even with the crazy production techniques the songs remain raw and screaming, much like the dual male/female vocal style. That's the one thing the might turn off most first-time listeners. But if you can get used to it (and you will) you'll be treated to some of the best post-whatever rock anywhere.

Lillies and Remains are a very new band, releasing their first EP in 2008 and their first album, Part of Grace, in 2009. They're a dark, gothic/post-punk band that sound a bit like Bauhaus crossed with Bloc Party. They are dark, but also energizing in an un-ironic way. They actually have a very positive side to their sound at times and make some really catchy songs. They also sing entirely in English, so they're a good band for those of you who might have a chip on your shoulder over Japanese lyrics.

Yukari Telepath

Coaltar of the Deepers has been around since 1991 and have released a massive amount of music. They've gone from grunge to metal to shoegaze and many things in-between. Their 2007 Yukari Telepath album combines all of this and adds a large electronic element. Still, they are extremely melodic, heavy and relentless. They haven't released anything new since 2007, so I'm really hoping they are still together and working on something new. I really wish there were more sound clips of this album to share. It's very high on my best-ever list.

It's been a little slower this week in the new music department, but also busy, in a way. New music went out and new foundations were laid with some other stuff like the cover song that'll be on the album, and my own ideas on how the album will flow. At least, what I think it will do now. It's something that can always change.

Outside of the album, we've picked up a new live gig! We'll be playing New Years Eve at RT Quinlan's in Duluth. Our friends The Acceleratti will also be there, and we're still waiting to hear about one more band. Could be pretty exciting if it all pans out. Well, that is if you don't think we're enough to get excited about.

And of course this week is a busy one too. We've got the big Rock for the Tots show on Saturday, and an appearance on KUWS on Thursday. Make sure to listen in. I'm sure we'll have some really profound things to say.

Miley Cyrus - "The Climb" - If you've never heard the song "The Climb," beware! Don't think about it too much. This song grosses me out for many reasons. It's by Miley Cyrus, who is a child star certainly doomed to being a coke whore by her 25th birthday. She is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, who apparently sees nothing wrong in pimpin' out his child to Walt Disney. Plus, he sucks goat balls. The "climb" in the song basically refers to the (hackneyed) theme of "it's not where you end up in life, but how you got there." Really? I'm sure it was a really tough journey, what with the backing of your quasi-celebrity dad and Walt fucking Disney to carve out a career for your down home skank self. And to me, there's just nothing quite like a sexy child to placate the slavering hoardes of psuedo pedophiles out there. So gross!

The new Surfactants album is underway! I thought it might be interesting to keep a very brief continuing commentary on how it's going.

As of today, there are three new songs floating around. We're hoping to do a proper full album right out of the gate this time instead of doing the short EP thing, but we'll just have to see how things go. We want to get you new material as soon as possible, but we also want to make it worth the wait.

Getting the gears back in motion has been a trial, but now that they have been greased with the requisite amount of blood and tears, things seem to be humming along nicely. We are very optimistically looking to January 2010 to get this thing out to you. Realistically may be another story.

Also, we're casting a wide net for live shows. We really hope all of our northern MN and WI brothers and sisters can make it out to the show December 12th. We might even be able to primer some of these new ideas. Oh, including a new uniform as well...

Reminder: You can join in our little Facebook group and talk about anything that's on your mind. Yeah, it's a group, not a page, because I don't know anything about Facebook. But I think that this way the fans have much more control over what goes on, something we greatly prefer. So go nuts.
